why ban only two serials ban most of the Hindi serials

November 19, 2010

Such a big hue and cry over two Hindi reality shows BIG BOSS AND RAKHI KA SAWANT

“They are corrupting the young mind, not fit for children, should be pushed to after 11 in the nite slot etc etc.”

all news channels and newspapers shouted these words

But I wonder are these two serials only are not fit for children or young ones?

What about tens of others who in the name of Indian culture or our rituals misguiding not only the young ones but the elders also.

I am not an ardent fan of Hindi serials but when the TV is on the full day with all those heavy saris clad, bejeweled, highly decked up women dominating all the serials one can but not miss them and watch them and let them take over our lives.

I saw today’s episode of Ballika vadhu, one of the most popular TV serials of TV, a revolutionary serial which because of its novel idea and presentation out threw many established serials and artists. The mother in law was abusing the bahus, had forced them to remove all their jewels, take the position of servant in the house and the men of the family were cooly sitting there watching their wives being insulted.

This serial along with another one “Naa aaana iss des meri Laado” from the same channel have been showing women in the most derogatory position. Be it the Mother in law( Maa Saa or Ammaji) or the out of this world over submissive daughter in laws.

Both these serials along with many others show women being humiliated, insulted, taken for granted, being used as mere ornamental furniture

Most of the serials show men of the family having no back bone, no spine, no say in front of their mothers or Mother in law of their wives. they silently watch the women of family being tortured. they just stand helplessly with sullen and shocked expressions,

The bahus are shown as someone who are submissive, without any say in family matters, over obedient, patient , tolerant, forgiving, soft spoken.

The mother in laws are ofcourse the stereotypes ones dominating, abusive, insensitive, heartless and having ( all the negative traits one can think of).

Will showing such characters not corrupt our young minds or even the adult mentality?

Will the young ones not learn that bahus should be ill-treated; women should be humiliated, kicked around.

Will they not learn that they should not raise their voice even against inhuman acts, atrocities, injustice?

will they not learn that they should ignore their wife’s, not take their side, not stand up to them or support them?

Won’t the older men follow their counter parts in the serials?

Are these serials not spreading wrong messages for every one?

Are they not teaching the young women to live in suffering without standing for their rights or their position?

Such serials are in facts teaching the wicked inlaws and other wicked characters in the family all the tricks of the trade to ill treat the daughter in laws.

Various methods employed by such mother in laws or language used by them  are being used as guidelines for some mother in laws to treat their bahus in similar way.

Moreover such mother in laws in real life expect their bahus to be like the bahus of the serials— head covered, eyes downcast, no lounge in the mouth, always busy in the household chores, no personal life or chance of personal growth, ever smiling amidst the insults and bad words hurled at them by the inlaws, tolerant, submissive, patient and what not/

Aren’t such serials portraying a wrong image to the young ones, or the couples who are on the verge of matrimonial life, or the already married couples

Are they not proving to be the guidelines for everyone to follow them?

Do we want our next generation to be like these robotic bahus of the serials or do we want our sons to be like parasites, always walking taking the support of their mothers, and neglecting their wife’s?

The main purpose of the serials is entertainment or show some positive things but not to spoil the society and relations. Send wrong signals to every one around or to make the life of all young bahus miserable.

After a lot of coaxing and pulling, the father of an US setlled Indian Family, forced his two children to watch a TV serial. He acclaimed that this reflects our culture and is a must watch.Once they did,the children had so many questions, “So appa did your father also have an illegal wife?”,”Appa, did your mother insult amma his way?”,”Is that why we came to US?”,etc etc.. This piece was shown in a mallu comedy serial
Serials, without a doubt, conveys lot of wrong messages about culture, about family, about mil-dil relations. It does not end there, but gives people ideas on how to ill treat and insult others…Viewers should learn to adopt only the good and omit the bad, they say so.. But if you ask me what element of goodness is shown, will be a good question..:-)No answer

After showing extreme abuse the serials show how the subservient, obedient, self effacing, no-personal-life/goals/hopes/dreams bahu wins – so the final message is that dils should tolerate abuse to win.

And in one serial a young daughter plans to elope – no discussion about why can’t she introduce her choice of husband to the family – the dishonor of elopement/choosing her life partner/wishing to have a say in choosing her life partner – is the ultimate sin a girl can commit in these serials.

And then the elders are always right because experience is all that matters. So no new ideas can be introduced – change is the worst sin possible here.

all these ideas on TV makes life, and our fight against submissiveness, even tougher!…instilling the right way of thinking in our sons is already a difficult task…movies and serials make it worse.

I agree with you. We do need self censorship by the channels. There should be an effort from their side to show how a family can be happy with efforts from everyone.

    Take care

PS : Left comment on previous post too.

Even, now some of the comedy shows become total explicit in the name of comedy…they use abusive words (teri maa ki….), wearing very low dresses and giving horny expressions….is this indian culture?

Extremely complicated as it is nobody has understood Indian culture fully yet if there is such a thing really! It’s well known that portrayal of historic/mythological events by TV or movies cannot be held as authentic yet people fall for it and force it down their young ones. It is also denigrating to Indian viewers to continue to watch the same old stuff that was shown decade ago only the intensity has increased. Almost every channel shows stupid family feuds. Goes to show average Indians have not matured.
    …just my thoughts
