Saw a very striking, attractive, glittering and obviously expensive dress at a tailor’s shop. When asked him who is going to wear such an outlandish dress in normal life, I was informed that the particular outfit would be worn by one of the contestants in a reality show for just 5 minutes.

In all the TV serials the lady characters are always (whether cooking, sleeping, going for functions) shown wearing heavy embroidered, shimmering saris and outfits. Even the male characters are always in expensive attires. And all these dresses come from famous showrooms and designers.

The characters are never shown repeating the same dress. And of course each dress is accompanied by matching accessories i.e. heavy jewellery.

The surprising part is that only the characters of TV serials wear such dresses in their so called real life depicted in the show. In actual real life all the so called multimillionaire/rich/ upper class people are often seen wearing casual may be expensive clothes ( at least not sequined, adorned with heavy laces and beads)

Ever thought what happens to those extravagantly expensive and rich dresses?

I was told that sometimes the productions houses are expected to retain the clothes for years together.

That means such a sheer waste of money. After some years the dress designs will go out of fashion, the clothes will lose their sheen  and no one will wear them again.

I was even told that most of the times the outfits are sent to the market for resale.( naturally the producers cannot afford to let go thousands of rupees waste just like that—each costume costs big amounts ( especially the ones worn during marriage scenes).

If the outfits are sent to the market to be sold amongst other merchandise that means we may get some of the second hand dresses if we happen to purchase from these shops.

Are we wearing hand me downs from the so called famous big showrooms?

Does it mean that even after spending so much we may end up wearing something which has already been worn by some individual? Not just tried on but actually been worn for hours together (that means the sweat, body odor of the person will be lingering on the clothes – eeksssssss)

I was very surprised to see one common trend in USA. (I am not aware of other countries). In USA one can buy a dress or any other thing (household appliances, shoes, bags, mattresses, even vacuum cleaners, phones anything), wear it, use it as many number of times he wants and then go and return the same at any outlet of the company in any part of USA, the only requirement is that the tags which were attached to the dresses at the time of buying should be there and if possible the receipt should also be there. Although receipt is not a must but the tags should be there (not attached to the dress but it should be there).

That means one can buy a particular thing in New York, use it for months and he can return it to any shop of the same brand in some other state in USA. How very convenient?

Imagine you have to attend a function – you go and buy a dress, wear it, make an impression in the function, then go and return it and get your money back.

This clearly shows that people may be buying and using the things which have already been used by others before.

Are the shopkeepers not cheating us by passing already used stuff as brand new and selling it to gullible people like us?

The day I came to know that there are well known shops which are selling the already used clothes of some serials, I have become wary of going to shops and buying.

What is the guarantee that the sari which I bought  or the Kurta Pyjama set which my husband bought are brand new and not been worn by some other person in some serial or movie?

Ow this was an eye opener, though I often used to wonder what they would be doing with so many clothes worn on all these television serials, now I know.

Dont we have a law against this? Why cant they tell us it was worn, and has been suitable cleaned and is available at a discount?
